As the main character grows emotionally & spiritually, we begin to see that life is much more dangerous, complex & frightening than a youth might appreciate. Even so, I would not call this a proselyting book, but a piece of historical fiction of a boy who happens to be touched by Christ. Got this book for a sick neighbor. The recipes call for normal items and are simple to make and do not take much time. The Out of Sight calendar is a flawless mixture of 60s hippy and 00s high-tech. At this point, I have only read about 40% of this book. As the author says more than once, not everyone will relate to his particular story with food. Has breakdowns of units of measurement and some additiinal sime math formulas as well. In his description of the people he calls friends, Scott shows the way people who choose to live in another country also form relationships as strong as, if not stronger than those based on blood ties.
